During the week of October 24-28, the Hanover Middle School held its first ever Bully Prevention week. With the help of students from the Anti-Bullying committee, Mr. Harris and Mrs. Caler devised an activity for students to do each day. These activities centered around making all students aware of the what bullying issues are, and learning new ways to counteract this problem. The week began with students completing a brief survey to measure social climate in the school and then the students were asked to give suggestions on how to make the school a better place for everyone. On Tuesday, students watched a brief video in which a football player from Florida State University befriended a child in the cafeteria who was sitting alone. Our students then had the opportunity to “mix-it-up” at lunch by sitting with anyone else in the cafeteria. Wednesday’s topic was Cyber-bullying and students were able to learn more about what Cyberbullying is and ways to use technology safely, while on Thursday students watched a second video in which JJ Watt, an NFL player, buddied up with a student who was being bullied when he moved to a new school. The culminating activity for the week occurred on Friday, when we held a Fun Run where students partnered up and completed a number of stations throughout the course of the race in order to receive a snack from Utz Quality Foods and the chance to win a gift card. It seemed to be fun for all and we cannot wait to participate in activities again next year!
