October is National Bullying Prevention Month, but here at HMS, we have already begun speaking with our students about bullying. Since 5th grade brings together new students from all three buildings, for the very first time, we go to great lengths to make sure students understand what bullying looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Mr. Harris, guidance counselor for grades 56, met with students to make sure students understand the definition of bullying, so that they can better identify it and be part of the process to stop it! In October, HMS will host a variety of activities geared to bring awareness to bullying, and provide tips on how to help stop it. Last year, activities included daily video clips, trivia contests, and even a “Buddy Obstacle Course” where students partnered up to complete an outdoor course and receive a prize at the end. Along with academic achievement, we hold student safety as an absolute priority for each and every student. While we always encourage students to report suspected bullying to a teacher or staff member the moment they see it happening, we also offer an on-line way for students to report it, anonymously, using their Chromebooks. Every report is investigated by a school administrator, or guidance counselor. Join us in October, along with every month, to help stop Bullying!
