At the beginning and end of every school year, the students at Washington Elementary participate in Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) assessments. These assessments look at a combination of accuracy and comprehension to determine what level of book each child is best matched with. These levels are used to place students into guided reading groups with other students reading the same level of books. By matching students within groups the teacher can select leveled texts to use in instruction so all students move to more challenging texts as the year progresses. Children are monitored and, as needed, moved between groups to keep them in the group with the ‘just-right’ book.
