Robert (Son) Henry attended 9th grade at the Hanover Junior High in during the 1947-48 season. This is the story of his recruitment by a local private school as told to his cousin, Betty Eiserman Fulco, class of 1954.

In 1949 four boys who played 9th grade Hanover Jr High football were approached by Coach Fred Thoman, St Francis Prep, Spring Grove and offered a 3 year scholarship to the school to play football and other sports. Son told us that no one really knows what that meant to them in that time. Getting offered this chance of a scholarship.

These four were recruited in 1949 as sophomores by St Francis Prep -  Robert Henry (SON), Robert Davidson (SPIKE), Monroe Laughman, Reuhl Fake (RUDY)

My cousin was living with my grandmother, Mary Henry, who had a big family at the time. His mother was deceased and times were hard. He said they were all treated wonderfully. By staff and fellow students.

Son said the guys used to sleep in on Sunday mornings and everyone else went to church - so one day the Priest came to them and said no more sleeping in - you don't have to go to church here - but you do have to get up and go - so they all went to church there.

Fellow class mates from EHS wanted them to go to school with them as these guys were good football players. My cousin said he was offered a football scholarship to go to college but really did not see how to do it and I guess did not really have the support to do this kind of thing.

Son said the classes were small and he learned a lot and did well.

He worked for a clothing store in the summer time - and he talked to the owner and he let him take clothes to school and sell to students. Son got a commission.

All played varsity football for 3 years. Davidson and Fake played varsity basketball and baseball for 3 years. Robert Davidson broke his shoulder in the La Salle football game in his senior year, was unable to finish the season . He was considered best defensive player

Monroe Laughman received award for best line player. He was also an artist. His work appeared in the school paper "The Hill".

He said he knows, if he hadn't had this opportunity, he probably would have left school and gotten a job. Because in those days there was no money.
