High Street Building

The High Street Building was constructed in 1885. Until its construction, the Walnut Street school was the only public school in the borough. Schools in this era included grades one through eight. In 1889, the school board instituted a high school curriculum and the first graduating class matriculated in 1893. There were nine graduates, eight women and one man.

The high school was moved in 1900 to the Eichelberg Building and the High Street School reverted to its elementary function. The building was used as an elementary school until 961. The U.S. Post Office currently occupies this site.
