History of the Eichelberger Building

#1002
LOC:

Captain Eichelberger
Portrait

There is some debate about the name of the high school from 1900 to 1914. Initially, the name of the high school appears to have been "Eichelberg" High School, not "Eichelberger" High School. However, there is evidence from diplomas that the official name of the school changed somewhere between 1907 and 1910 to "Hanover High School".

When Captain Eichelberger relocated his academy to Hanover in 1896 and built what has been known since 1932 as the Eichelberger Building, he named the school Eichelberg Academy. Captain Eichelberger donated the school to the community of Hanover in 1900. The high school was moved there from the High Street building in 1900 and the name of the high school was Eichelberg High School. We offer two pieces of evidence here to support that name.

The first is a postcard from 1908. Note the name. It is blurred but it is evident to see that the name is missing the "er" suffix. The second is a diploma from 1906. The "Eichelberg" name is distinguishable. Pictures (1) and (2) below. The John Flickinger diploma, 1910,  contains the name "Hanover High School" (4).

The 10-11 on the game ball refers to the year. Only 8 games were played during the 10-11 season. This is a reproduction of a post card. The vendor has verified that the original dates from  between 1908 and 1917.

Fourth graders, we ask help in identifying the players. Where would you need to go to find the names of the players in this picture? Can you find a link on your school home page of the business that might have the information?

Alumni, we also ask your help in identifying the players in this photo. We are interested in linking names to individual players. Anyone's grandfather?

1921 Eichelberg Building reprinted from the 1921 Nornir
This reprint confirms that the building was 2 rooms deep in 1921. The larger view of this picture (poor resolution) appears to confirm the name A. W. Eichelberger Building. In 1921 this building was used as an elementary school.
