Confederate States of America
Mississippi Secession Flag

Date: 1861

Description: Blue field, one large white star centered. [X07]

On 9 January 1861, the Convention of the People of Mississippi adopted an Ordinance of Secession. A large blue flag bearing a single white star was raised over the capitol building in Jackson. Upon witnessing the event, an Irish born actor named Harry MaCarthy, was inspired to write a song entitled The Bonnie Blue Flag. This flag predates the Civil War and may have originated as early as 1810.
