Carol (Shafer) Callahan

Berwyn, Pa.

Carol, her husband, Paul, and their Labrador retriever live in suburban Philadelphia. They met in Ocean City, New Jersey in the 50’s, and they have a daughter, Susan Elizabeth.  Carol was a teacher of the deaf (1958-1964) and then a homemaker. Paul is a semi-retired attorney. Her hobbies are golf, tennis, gardening, literature, and opera.

She and her husband have traveled throughout the continental USA, and in Canada, Europe, and the Caribbean. They enjoy live performances of major entertainers, opera, Broadway musicals, and plays.

Carol feels the education we got at EHS is about the same as today’s public high schools. Mary Menges is her favorite teacher and also gets her vote as the most effective teacher.

She sometimes thinks about the good old days when she liked the … “close family ties of a small town, the slower pace and easy accessibility to places, and a feeling of safety.” She does appreciate our modern technology resulting in cell phones, computers, etc. and the advances in medicine.

Carol says, “I’ve always tried to do my best, so I believe being conscientious in all endeavors is what I’m most proud of.”

Her message to her classmates is …

“Try to enjoy every stage of life no matter how difficult the circumstances.”

Carol received a BA in English from Beaver College and did graduate work in Special Education at Trenton State University. Paul has a BS and a Law Degree from Villanova University.
